Nearly 170 boats from more than 70 sailing clubs took part in the Grafham Grand Prix on Sunday 30th December. There were two races, with a break for lunch and warming up! Racing took place on two courses, with two starts on each course. Although the wind forecast didn't look promising there was a reasonable 8-10 mph westerly breeze in the morning, dropping away to nothing for a while in the afternoon before recovering to a gentle 4-5 mph.
In the fast/asymmetric fleet, there was a strong presence from the B14 Pursuit Team with ten out of the 37 entries, but it was Howard Steavenson & Adam Ovington in an International 14 who scored two firsts to win the fleet, ahead of Mark Barnes & Peter Nicholson (5 points) and Dick Roe & Kate Dulieu (6 points) in B14s and Tim Saxton & Colin Rainback in a 49er (7 points).
In the medium/symmetric fleet, it was the Fireballs who provided the numbers, with 12 out of the 35 entries. However, the conditions favoured the 505s sailed by Ian Pinnell & Carl Gibbon (2 points) and Charlie Walters & Dougal Cram (7 points) beating the first Fireball sailed by Dave Wade & Ben McGrane (7 points) on countback.
