Gill Sprint 15 Winter TT

A bright day and moderate breeze greeted the 16 boats competing for the Chris Black memorial trophy in the Gill Sprint 15 Winter TT.

With the southerly wind forecast to swing to the East, Race Officer Nigel Denchfield,  anchored the committee boat close to the Northern shore to set the Sprint 15 square course alongside Grafham’s club racing marks.  Four Yellow/Orange pillar buoys identified the course for the  Sprint 15’s to navigate over 3 back-to-back races.

Race 1 set off promptly and the Sprint 15’s were first away having been promoted above the club sailors for the day.  The wind was Southerly which meant the beat remained quite central and as the fleet got off the line Mark Aldridge in 66 was first around the windward mark closely followed by Steve Sawford (1989) and Jenny Ball (2025), Paul Craft (1982), Stuart Snell (2022) and Ed Tuite Dalton (2023).

The top reach was square and sufficiently away from the South shore to give uninterrupted wind onto the run down to the leeward mark.  Aldridge took an early gybe to keep an inside line downwind as did Sawford, however J.Ball went further out to try and find some extra pressure.  The bottom reach was quite broad and heading up around mark 3 enabled the line to be fetched on port tack, so one less tack on the 2nd beat saw the positions up front remain the same for lap 2.

Steve Sawford from Rutland Water SC finished 2nd overall

However, in lap 3 Sawford took Aldridge on the beat having gone left where Aldridge picked a more central line through the club Laser fleet.  This wasn’t the fastest course and Sawford rounded the windward mark in the lead.  Aldridge managed to get in front of Sawford on the 3rd run and lead over the line into lap 4 with J.Ball in 3rd, Craft in 4th and Tuite Dalton 5th.  Sawford then proceeded to sail away from Aldridge in a stellar performance. J.Ball also overtook Aldridge who was taking on water due to a lost port hatch cover and going slower and slower.  Race 1 finished with Sawford victorious, J.Ball 2nd, Aldridge listing 3rd, Craft 4th, Tuite Dalton 5th and D.Ball 6th.

Between races, Aldridge called upon a safety RIB to try to source a hatch cover, but to no avail so it was an early bath for number 66.

In race 2, Craft was first around the windward mark, followed by J.Ball, D.Ball, Tuite Dalton and Sawford which is where the positions remained on to the second lap.  Sawford and D.Ball went off to the left side of the beat as the other leaders stayed on the right side. This made little difference to Craft who was starting to extend his lead quite considerably followed by Tuite Dalton, D.Ball, J.Ball and Sawford onto lap 3.  Over the line after 3 laps by some considerable margin was a lonely Craft, Tuite Dalton, J.Ball, Sawford, D.Ball and young gun Jason Clarke getting some better boat speed.

Jenny Ball from Marconi SC finished 3rd overall

Race 3 got underway with reduced pressure and a slight swing to the East.  Clarke was now dialled in and in pole position off the line. J.Ball tacked off to try the right side of the beat which did not pay with race 2 winner Craft also tacking off a little further up that leg to no avail.  At the windward mark it was Clarke in the lead which proved to be a good safe position as Elfring crash-tacked to round mark 1. This didn’t quite go to plan and he capsized on top of Sandells who was having his best race of the day until that point.  Craft, in avoiding the carnage caught the buoy and did his penalty turn.

As the fleet came around to lap 2, Clarke and D.Ball were battling it out swapping positions although it was Clarke who rounded mark 1 first, then D.Ball, Snell, Craft and J.Ball.  Lap 3 saw Clarke keeping his lead despite various manoeuvres around the course by D.Ball, sister J.Ball, Snell, Craft and Sawford and race 3 concluded the day’s racing with Jamie Clarke victorious.

Final positions for the day were 1st Paul Craft (Worthing Sailing Club), 2nd Steven Sawford (Rutland Water SC) and 3rd Jenny Ball (Marconi SC).  The overall winter series was also concluded with Class Chairman Ed Tuite Dalton the winner, Paul Craft in 2nd and Jenny Ball 3rd. Judith Black and her daughter attended the prizegiving to present the Chris Black trophy to Paul Craft in memory of Grafham Sprint 15 Grand Master Chris. Grafham Water Sailing Club and the Sprint 15 class association would  like to thank Gill for supporting the event and the prizegiving.

It’s great to see the fleet youngsters doing well and winning races. Congratulations to Jason who worked hard for his win after been pushing the fleet hard recently. Note that all 3 races were won with the ‘older’ boats, so no matter how new your boat or equipment it’s the nut on the tiller that’s the important part. Do remember to put you hatch covers on properly!

Thank you to all visiting boats, club sailors, our race committee, GWSC safety fleet and shore staff in making this an excellent event.

Working Party News

Thank you to everyone who came to the grounds working party on 1st March; it was a great turnout of excellent volunteers!

We cleared a huge bramble from the berths by Slipway 1, uncovering a few good-sized tree trunks that will need grinding out by our tree surgeon. We also recovered an abandoned boat out from the hedge where it had been engulfed by more brambles. It was tough and muddy, but with great team work we recovered a good few berths ready for the new season.

Special thanks to Ian for the expert use of his tow bar. There is now a pile of brambles at the top of the cat park, which will be moved to the bonfire area as soon as the ground allows; it was too muddy to get there.

After a lunch of baguettes, crisps, chocolate and a delicious Victoria sponge (thanks Kevin!), we then took to the main boat park to move dead, abandoned, unidentified or unpaid boats up to the grass on the left as you approach the cat park.

Members, please, if you find that your boat has been moved up here you need to go to the office as a matter of urgency. If you are worried that your boat might have been put up here but can’t get to the club to check, please call the office.

By popular demand, I’ll be organising another grounds working party again soon – watch this space! Thanks again, Natalie

The Construction of Grafham Water

Talk at Buckden Library

On Wednesday 23rd March, starting at 2pm, Buckden library is hosting what should prove to be a fascinating talk about the creation of our favourite sailing lake!

Using an extensive set of photos, Local History Society member, Richard Storey, will look at the reasons why Grafham Water was made, how it was constructed and what happened to all the lost farms now under water.

Free tickets are available in advance from Buckden Library or by email from StNeots.Referral@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

Places are limited so please book early if you would like to attend.

Cambridgeshire Libraries is continuing to ask all staff and visitors to wear a face covering whilst in the building (if they can), hand sanitiser is available and ventilation levels monitored.

29er Winter Championship

Under the orange flag – the 29er Winters

Although the weather forecast was not encouraging with gales forecast for Saturday and tricky light winds for Sunday, the Class Association was keen to go ahead.  So three months of planning, emails, WhatsApp  and phone calls were not wasted and the team swung into action… well sort of.

Saturday was extremely windy, hovering in the mid 20kt range with white horses creaming down the lake from the west. A two hour postponement was extended into three hours, but there were signs of lulls appearing. One of these encouraged the race management team to head out in the hopes that a race could be sailed in the attractive looking 18-19kt. The course was laid and the fleet was about to launch when the lull disappeared and the wind leapt to 30-35kt.

Getting the team ashore was not easy, especially for the Committee boat which rolled furiously in the waves. The RO wisely gave the driving role to Andrew Lawman. With wind and waves at 90 degrees to the jetties, and the waves breaking over the top of them it took three goes to get the boat in and safe. The loss of the day, though expected now heaped lots of pressure on Sunday, and as the class rep. said…”it’s going to be all about the race management…”.

Sunday gave us sunshine and initially 4-5kt, but that was enough to race in. During the day five races were fitted for the 48 boats. The wind increased through the day, becoming a most pleasant 10-12kt. There was all the usual drama of big shifts to deal with, 30 degrees one way, then back again for the next race, then the other way. Much shifting of marks and the start line took place but the 29er mark layers were very quick and delays minimal. It all created plenty of activity in the committee boat, but the timekeeper kept everything in order, the postponements and odd general recall were smoothly dealt with.  The starts were amazing; this fleet know how to nail the line.  Finishing was often interesting with several boats overlapped on the line, but the recording teams scattered about the boat managed to untangle it all, and there were no scoring queries.

This was another very successful event and maintained Grafham’s high reputation for quality race management , something the class kindly pointed out afterwards.

New Year Regatta 2022

We kicked off 2022 in fine style with the New Year Regatta. Despite a forecast that was challenging, 42 boats took to the water and experienced mean winds of 15-18 kts, on top of which the occasional gust in the low 20s moved through. The mean axis stayed on 220 degrees all day, and the wind strength required a long opening beat, so the Committee boat anchored upwind of club mark R, allowing a 1000m beat off the line whilst keeping the windward mark significantly downwind of club W, well away from the lumpy wind around the windward shore. The bay between R and P allowed the leeward mark to be placed another 200m downwind of the start line. Three different race courses were sailed so that no one type of boat was favoured, and with all 3 races to count consistency was going to be the key to success. And so it proved…

The tricky P course was sailed first, and once on the reaches – a mere 500m long – the boats lucky enough to pick a gust flew along. But then came the grind of a 1200m beat! The fast fleet were able to complete 3 laps at around 13-15minutes a lap, but the race team took pity on the hiking boats by giving them just 2 which was quite enough!

The 4000 of Reynolds/Bartoli took the win, closely followed by the RS500 sailed by team Curtis, the Radial of Tim Evans and the FF15 Kneller/Painter combination. The trapezoid came next and most of the fleet stayed out for it. This produced a different mixture at the top, but Curtis and Evans were still in there at 1 & 2, with the Heffernan/Howell 4000 in third.

It was great to see so many young Team Grafham sailors joining in with the regatta, especially given the taxing conditions,

Overall, Tim Evans was a well-deserved winner, he was scarily fast! Second went to Reynolds/Bartoli and third to Kneller/Painter.  A Radial, 4000 and FF15 – three very different boats. See the full results here.

Many thanks go to the race management team who volunteered at quite short notice to create the event. The RIB teams of Bill & Katie Parish, Paul Sanwell, Ian Hewitt and Stephen Graham. The race courses owed their success to the accurate mark laying masterminded by Bill & Katie. In the Committee boat were Nigel Denchfield and the A-team of time keepers & recorders, Fiona Denchfield and Lynn Clarke, with Chris Clarke.  It was extremely busy in the boat, especially when all those Solos and Lasers came through each lap, and the RO only managed to drink his cocoa near the end of race 2. It was very rocky-roly too, the team had to work hard to prevent clocks, flasks and other kit flying across the boat.

Goodbye 2021, Hello 2022

After 20 Open Meetings and 3 Championships, the 2021 open meeting season at Grafham Water SC is finally over.

The season started shortly after lockdown finished in April with the Youth Regatta and Optimist Easter Egg and finished with the 420 End of Seasons in November. 1,500 boats have visited the club in this period. The start gun has been triggered an estimated 200 times, and the black flag used more than once.

Thanks and congratulations are due to Nigel Denchfield and the army of club volunteers for the huge effort invested. The club has received some fantastic feedback from visitors and classes about the high standard of racing, facilities and welcome offered by Grafham Water SC.

Introducing the New Website

Welcome to the new Grafham Water SC website. The site has been entirely reorganised with the aim of making it:

  • Visually stunning, taking advantage of the fantastic photos by our professional photographer Paul Sanwell / OPP
  • Easier to find what you are looking for, by structuring it around “journeys” for the different target audiences

It features a completely new layout with improved navigation, a members’ dashboard to take members directly to the things you use most, a search engine, large photos and full integration with WebCollect. Our previous website has served us well since 2013 but we are now coming right up to date and taking advantage of recent advances in technology.

Latest updates and reminders appear top right of the home page, with links to further information, so you are always alerted to what’s coming up.

We hope you will bear with us while you get used to the new layout and where to find things. Here are a few hints for users who were used to the old website:

  • if you are a club member who uses the site mainly to access weather data, webcams and latest news, go to the Members’ Dashboard which you can find under the On The Water drop down menu or via the blue button on the right hand side of the home page. This is intended to be the go-to place for all your regular needs. If there is something you use regularly that is not there please let us know. From here you have direct links to entering racing and signing up for coaching and volunteering as well as other useful pages.
  • If you are a visitor who wants to book day sailing, enter an open meeting or see the results and photos from a recent open meeting go to the Visitors landing page (click on Visitors in the menu bar)
  • If you are interested in finding out all about our club, go to the Join Us area
  • If you want to find out about our Training Centre and the courses we offer, go to the Training landing page (click on Training in the menu bar)

There is a new search function so that you can search for information and articles by keyword. We have simplified the menu structure so there is only one level of menus. Each top-level menu item has a ‘landing page’ which contains a lot of information about that area of interest, with links to all the important pages related to the subject. If you can’t find the information you are looking for, check out the links on the landing page.

The integration between the website and WebCollect means that you may see this message the first time you open a page that has a WebCollect window within it. If you do, then follow the instructions on the screen appropriate to your browser. You should only need to do this once.

We would like to thank our club photographer Paul Sanwell, OP Photography, for the stunning images which have made a major contribution to the website. The website development team of Hilary Talbot and Peter Gee launched the project in March and welcome any feedback you may have; please email webmaster@grafham.org.
