Cambs Youth League

The first event in the 2019 Cambridgeshire Youth League took place at Grafham on Saturday 1st June. In fact it should have been the second event but bad weather caused the first, at Cam SC to be postponed and that is now scheduled for Saturday 8th June.

35 young sailors from Grafham, Cam, Hunts and Ely Sailing Clubs enjoyed sunshine and mainly light breezes to sail three races round a trapezoid course set by Race Officer Gordy Baines.

The largest fleet was the Toppers, there were also 7 Optimists, 3 RS Aero 5s, an RS Feva and a 2000.

The event was won by Grafham RS Aero sailor Jonathan Bailey, with Grafham’s James Clarke second in a Topper.

Amelie Hacker from Hunts finished in third place.

Grafham’s Jodie Jackson won the Endeavour prize.

The full results can be found here.

The remaining events after Cam SC on 8th June are: 13th July at Ely, 7th September at Hunts and 12th October at Paxton

Mark Laying

“marks one eight five zero metres two zero zero degrees”

Such a VHF transmission is no longer gibberish to four GWSC members who spent May 25 on our club-level mark-laying course. The participants learnt about using GPS to measure distances and bearings and how to use a hand-bearing compass to check angles. They also learnt about how crucial it is to communicate fully with their crew and the race officer, including about wind speed and direction. So congratulations to Alex Lamdin, Beth Parish, and Carol and Ian Paterson for doing the course. And thanks to Bill Parish and Ian Wilson for instructing. If the title above still remains gibberish and you would like to know what it means, why not think about attending one of the next two dates: July 27 or August 31 (you need to have at least Powerboat Level Two).

Aero Success for Young GWSC Member

Photo: Paul Wright-Anderson

On Saturday 27th April, Grafham Water was closed for sailing due to Storm Hannah. The blue and white flag was flying, meaning windsurfers only, as the gusts hit 40 knots. Meanwhile at Island Barn Reservoir in western London, the RS Aero UK Spring Championship was getting underway in winds gusting up to 34 knots. Young Grafham Water SC sailor, Jonathan Bailey, won the Aero 5 fleet with an impressive 1, 1, 2, (4), 3 in the five races. He was one of only 3 competitors in the Aero 5 fleet to complete all five races.

A full report is available on the RS Aero website here.

Friendly Fridays are back!

Friendly Friday pursuit racing restarts this Friday, 3rd May.

The race finishes at 1945.

Your start time depends on your boat – for instance Toppers start at 1857; Solos at 1903; standard Laser at 1904; Spitfire at 1919.

This is very much more relaxed racing than Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings – a great way to learn and practice your skills in friendly competition.

Your slower boat has equal chance of winning as a Foiling Moth!  It’s all down to how well you sail on the evening!

Race Officer Mike Edwards will set the course at 1800, starts the race from his deckchair on the pontoon, and will accept your sail-by sign-on while you’re on the water.

Friendly Fridays are a great way to start your weekend!

Grafham Easter Egg

The 5th Grafham Easter Egg, held on 19th-20th April, was a great success. 62 young sailors enjoyed warm sunny conditions, with wind that became lighter as the event went on, finally dying just after the finish of the final race. This annual event originally started as an Optimist Open Meeting, but this year was opened up to all youth classes, with starts for Toppers and a Handicap fleet, as well as the Optimist Main and Regatta Fleets. 17 Toppers, 3 Topper 4.2s and 1 Pico joined the 40 Optimists for six races run by Race Officer Nigel Denchfield and his team. Visitors travelled from as far afield as Guernsey and North Wales.

After racing there was an Easter Egg hunt for all competitors, although some of the eggs didn’t survive the hot sun very well! All agreed that the new format had worked well and that the Optimist and Topper sailors both benefited from a joint event.

The winner of the Handicap fleet was Matthew Donley from Grafham in a Topper 4.2.

In the Optimist Regatta fleet, Ella Cumming from Warsash SC was in 1st place.

2nd in the Optimist Regatta fleet was Tom Peace from Warsash SC and 3rd was Felix Ridley Whittle from Draycote Water SC.

Poppy McEwan from Grafham and Olivia Elliott from Guernsey YC received Endeavour Awards in the Optimist Regatta fleet.

Derin Con Soyer from Draycote was the winner in the Optimist main fleet.

Lila Edwards from Parkstone YC was 2nd in the Optimist main fleet and also first under 11, and Cameron Bignold from Royal Lymington YC was 3rd.

Eliana Edwards from Parkstone YC received the award for Sportsmanship.

Alexander Maclay from Grafham Water SC was the winner in the Topper fleet.

Henry Smith from West Riding SC was the second placed Topper and Archie McEwan from Grafham came third.

Lotte Post from Grafham Water SC was 4th Topper and Oscar Bell from Cam SC was 5th.

The Endeavour Award for the Topper fleet went to Josh Donley.

Thrills and Spills

John Clifton 1917 – 2018

It is with sadness that I report the death of John Clifton, friend and Flying Fifteen afficionado at Grafham for so many years. John was a founder member of the club and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his energy and enthusiasm in helping to establish Grafham Water Sailing Club as the premier inland venue that it has become. John was active into his second century, competing in the Wednesday evening series – for which he had great personal enthusiasm – in his hundredth year and, until very recently, racing his model yachts in Bedford.

Latterly, John became very weak, following hospital treatment earlier in December. He appeared to be making a recovery and had moved into residential care but his death came peacefully over the weekend.

The funeral will take place at 1:45pm on Wednesday 30th January at Bedford Crematorium. Family flowers only. Donations if desired are for Prostate Cancer UK and may be made via www.memorygiving.com
